History and Breeding

The breeding of KWPN horses at the Feričanci Stud Farm began with the arrival of the first five carefully selected mares. Our objective was to focus on the genetic potential of the individuals, whose primary goal was to further reproduction.

Five mares were chosen, each of which descended from a top stallion and were selected from among those that had left the most offspring in harness driving up to that point.

Stallion Selection

The first choice was Delviro HBC, a multiple Dutch champion in stallion selection. The lightness of movement, flexibility and willingness to work brought him into the elite company of KWPN stallions. He is the offspring of Vulcan, a stallion who was also at the World and European Championships in single harness driving; he passed all his splendour onto his son Delviro.

Mares

Here at the Stud Farm, we also find the daughters of Atleet, Pleint’s Liberator and Patijn, stalled in combination with the maternal fathers of the legendary stallions Saffraan and Manno. With the arrival of two more mares in 2023, a mare was purchased from the stallion Iccellie, whose sons currently show the most willingness to work in harness driving, which is one of the desired virtues of this horse breed.

The mare Miantha H was purchased at the end of 2023 and has been repeatedly received awards for beauty and as the champion of the Netherlands in the mare category. She descends from the father Cizand; the maternal father is Manno.

The mare has been a great hit for the Stud Farm: she gave birth to a male foal, which we hope will become a breeding stallion at the farm itself in the near future. Ucellie is the son of Minathe H and Icellie, and we have confidence that he will follow in his illustrious father’s footsteps.

Breeding

To stall better horses for harness driving and dressage, the stallion Negro (FERRO X Variant), who was awarded stallion of the year in 2017, is used for breeding, as is the father of Valegro, the winner of the 2016 Olympic Games, and the father of Kjant, the best-rated young horse in the KWPN BREED. We are proud to house 9 offspring at the Stud Farm through three successful breeding seasons.
